Obie Williams, Kobe’s father, had spoken to his daughter just moments before disaster struck. As the storm descended upon her home in Thomson, Georgia, Kobe reassured him that she would take shelter in the bathroom with her babies, following his advice.

She hoped this precaution would be enough to protect them from the storm’s wrath. What followed would forever alter the course of their family’s lives. Kobe, who used to call her father daily, sounded particularly worried that day. Obie could hear the fierce winds outside her trailer and tree branches battering the windows.

Despite the storm’s destruction, Kobe vowed to follow her father’s guidance and remain in the bathroom with her twin infants. However, after their call ended, Obie’s attempts to reach her again went unanswered. That’s when the family realized something was wrong.

Later that day, one of Kobe’s brothers braved the hazardous conditions to check on her. The roads were blocked by fallen trees and downed power lines, making the journey perilous. When he arrived, he was met with an unbearable sight. A massive tree had crashed through the roof of Kobe’s trailer, directly onto the spot where she had taken shelter with her sons. The impact killed Kobe instantly, and she fell onto her babies. None of them survived.

In an instant, the storm had torn apart the Williams family’s world, leaving them heartbroken by the loss.

I’d seen pictures of them when they were born and every day after, but I hadn’t made it out to meet them yet, Obie said of his grandsons. Now, I’ll never get to meet them. It’s devastating.”

Hurricane Helene had already caused widespread destruction in Florida before surging into Georgia. By the time it hit Thomson, it had grown into a monstrous storm, with strong winds and relentless rain pounding the region.

Kobe had told her family that evacuating with her one-month-old twins wasn’t feasible. She chose to remain in her trailer, hoping they would be safe. However, the storm proved far too powerful.

Helene claimed more than 200 lives across Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and the Carolinas, leaving countless families grieving and communities shattered. The tragic deaths of Kobe Williams and her twin infants have sparked an outpouring of grief on social media. Many people have shared their condolences and offered prayers and support to the heartbroken family.
